This 1920s Philadelphian Georgian home in Birmingham, Alabama has a captivating tale of love, determination, and exquisite restoration. Architect, James Laughlin, embarked on a remarkable journey when he stumbled upon this historic gem, sparking an enduring partnership with designer, Heather Chadduck Hillegas, to restore the home to its original 1920s spirit and Philadelphia Georgian elegance.

Countless love letters left in the mailbox and many years of pining eventually led to Laughlin’s largest undertaking. The restoration journey began with the daunting task of clearing 67 dumpsters worth of debris, foundational repairs, and plaster restoration, breathing new life into the nearly derelict property.

Balancing Formality & Warmth

With a deep appreciation for balance, symmetry, and meaningful storytelling, Laughlin and Chadduck infused the home with decor and relics from their adventures in Egypt, creating a well-traveled atmosphere that seamlessly blended with the home’s architectural splendor. Their careful attention to detail, from custom doors and period-appropriate millwork to the selection of quality and style reminiscent of the 1920s, resulted in a new-old house that honored the home’s 100-year legacy.

The culmination of their dedication to restoring the home to its original glory and infusing it with contemporary charm is evident in every corner, inviting visitors to appreciate the love and admiration poured into the house.

The property, rich with historical allure, offers a compelling promise to the visitors of The Shops at Carolina Furniture where they can draw inspiration from Laughlin and Chadduck’s restoration story.
