A Sherrill Furniture Spotlight on Craftsmanship and Custom Upholstery

Some manufacturers make furniture. Others make the kind of furniture people genuinely love. Sherrill Furniture, built in Hickory, North Carolina, has been doing the latter for well over half a century. Here in Williamsburg, we carry Sherrill as one of our most celebrated upholstery lines, and the reason is straightforward. They represent something increasingly rare in the industry: a domestic manufacturer with genuine heirloom standards, an extraordinary breadth of customization, and a design sensibility that moves gracefully from a formal living room to a relaxed study to a bedroom sitting area. For homeowners who want furniture that is both considered and lasting, Sherrill belongs in the conversation from the very beginning.

A Heritage Built in Hickory

There is no shortcut to becoming a benchmark for American-made upholstery. Sherrill has earned its standing through a commitment to domestic craftsmanship that has remained consistent even as the broader industry shifted manufacturing overseas. Each piece is built by hand at their facility in Hickory, the heart of the American furniture industry, and the quality that results from that process is unmistakable to anyone who sits in it. Frame construction, spring systems, cushion engineering, fabric application, and finishing details are all subject to the kind of close attention that only comes from an operation that has never lost sight of what it means to build something well.

The Case for Custom

What truly sets Sherrill apart is the depth of their custom program. Across hundreds of silhouettes, clients can specify fabric from an extraordinary range of options, selecting not only the cloth but the finish, the trim detail, the leg profile, and the overall configuration. This means a Sherrill chair in one home can look entirely different from the very same frame in another, and both can be perfectly right for their respective spaces. The customization goes beyond surface choices and into the actual architecture of a piece, which is a distinction that matters when a room has specific needs that off-the-shelf purchasing simply cannot answer.

For clients working with our design team here at The Shops, this flexibility is one of the most powerful tools we have. When a room calls for a particular scale, a specific fabric weight that can stand up to daily use, or a finish that ties back to an existing wood tone in the space, Sherrill makes it possible to get there precisely. With over 400 furniture lines available to our clients, that precision is still something we point to as one of Sherrill’s most defining strengths. Our complimentary one-on-one design consultations often begin with a vision and end with a Sherrill custom order.

Silhouettes That Earn Their Place

Sherrill’s catalog is a study in considered range. From tightly tailored transitional sofas to deep, generously scaled sectionals, from wing chairs with quiet architectural presence to club chairs designed for the kind of comfort you do not want to leave, the breadth of what they offer is one of the things that makes them a consistent presence in sophisticated interiors. Their designs tend to honor the classics without being beholden to them, which is another way of saying they age well in rooms that will continue to evolve around them.

Their companion line, CTH Sherrill, extends the same craft into more casual and custom residential settings, giving our design team additional range when a space calls for something slightly more relaxed in spirit but equally uncompromising in quality. Together, the two lines offer remarkable versatility for living rooms, reading rooms, master suite sitting areas, and formal parlors alike. Whatever the room, whatever the lifestyle, there is a Sherrill solution worth considering.

Something New Is Coming!

The Spring High Point Market, running April 25 through 29 in High Point, North Carolina, is where the industry gets its first look at the collections that will shape interiors for seasons to come. This spring, Sherrill is making one of the most anticipated debuts of the market with House of DuVäl, a new brand developed in collaboration with Northern Virginia-based luxury interior designer DuVäl Reynolds.

Rooted in what Reynolds describes as New American Heritage, the collection draws its design language from the rich textures and tailored finishes of menswear. Architectural, grounded, and quietly refined, the 28-piece debut spans living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and home offices, offering a cohesive aesthetic that feels both timeless and distinctly of the moment. We are looking forward to bringing House of DuVäl to our showroom here in Williamsburg, and we will have more to share once these pieces arrive. If you want to be among the first, our design team would love to hear from you.
